Ramp Signalling the Auckland's Motorway Network

Regulation Des Bretelles D'Acces Du Reseau Autoroutier D'Auckland Par Feux Tricolores

This article examines how the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) investigated new, innovative ways for the motorways and associated approach roads around Auckland to have their performance optimized. Methods included ramp signaling, which enables the proactive management of the overall network when combined with associated traveler information systems. Ramp signaling resulted in improved travel speeds, increased vehicle throughput, safer merging, and earlier clearance of evening commuter traffic. Ramp signaling system operations, performed in conjunction with the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), are reviewed. Managed priority lanes are also discussed.
