MeshBox: Mesh Network Communication System for Intelligent Transportation Research Using Open Source Software

This paper describes the design, implementation and deployment of a mesh network data communication system using an open source mesh network protocol. The system consists of wireless routers running open source software. An 802.11g wireless router is encased in a rugged waterproof enclosure with an internal battery pack. An open source Linux distribution of router software with Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol is -2- used in place of the commercial firmware. A web-based radio propagation application allows rapid design of a wireless network. The system is used for research in intelligent transportation systems and public safety, and demonstration of the capabilities of mesh networks.
