IS YOUR CITY'S AIRPORT READY FOR THE AIR TRAVEL EXPLOSION?

AIRPORT PLANNERS ARE FACING A JET-AGE AIR TRAVEL EXPLOSION WHICH PROMISES TO MAKE MOST METROPOLITAN AIRPORTS IN THE UNITED STATES OBSOLETE. BETWEEN 1950 AND 1966 THE AIR TRAVEL SHARE OF THE COMMON-CARRIER BUSINESS IN THE UNITED STATES FOR AIR TRANSPORTATION INCREASED FROM 13 TO 66 PERCENT. DURING THE 1970'S THIS TOTAL IS EXPECTED TO GO TO 450 MILLION. ACKNOWLEDGING THAT AMERICAN CITIES OF ALL SIZES ARE FACED WITH REVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENTS IN AIRPORT REQUIREMENTS, FACTORS ARE DISCUSSED WHICH MUST BE DEALT WITH. SUCCESSFUL AIRPORT PLANNING MUST REALIZE THAT: (1) THE AIRPORT IS INADEQUATE OR WILL MOST CERTAINLY BE SO IN THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE, (2) FOUR TO SIX OR EVEN EIGHT YEARS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AN AIRPORT AFTER PLANNING HAS STARTED, (3) AN AUTHORITY SHOULD BE SET UP TO COORDINATE ALL PLANNING FOR A COMPREHENSIVE AREA AIRPORT, (4) CONSULTATION MUST BE MADE WITH THE AIRLINES, FIXED BASE OPERATORS, STATE AVIATION OFFICIALS AND THE FAA, AND (5) EXPERT PLANNING ASSISTANCE MUST BE OBTAINED. TWO SOLUTIONS ARE OFFERED TO PREVENT PRESENT AIRPORT TERMINAL LAYOUTS FROM BECOMING OBSOLETE: (1) BRINGING SOME SMALLER JETS TO FINGERS OF THE TERMINAL BUILDINGS, AND (2) TAKING PASSENGERS, VIA A NEW KIND OF VEHICLE, TO THE LARGER JETS WHICH WILL PARK AT A DISTANCE FROM THE TERMINAL. PROBLEMS OF AIRCRAFT NOISE, LAND USE ADJACENT TO AIRPORTS, AUTOMOBILE CONGESTION AND FINANCING AIRPORT CONSTRUCTION ARE DISCUSSED. FACTORS THAT MUST BE CONSIDERED REQUIREMENTS OF AIRPORT PLANNING ARE: (1) STUDY OF A CITY'S TOTAL ENVIRONMENT, (2) THE CO- ORDINATION OF ALL TRANSPORTATION WITH SURFACE TRANSPORTATION, (3) THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE CITY TO ITS REGION, AND TO OTHER CITIES, (4) CONSIDERATION OF INDUSTRIAL, TRADE, RECREATIONAL, SOCIAL, AND TOURISM FUNDAMENTALS, (5) GROWTH PATTERNS, (6) THE AVAILABILITY AND COST OF LAND, AND (7) STUDY OF THE PERFORMANCE AND POTENTIALS OF PRESENT AND FUTURE AIRCRAFT.
