Experimental Research on Ultra Thin Friction Course Interlayer Bonding Strength

A good technology for performance preventive maintenance is an ultra thin friction course (UTFC). Effective waterproofing, harder wearing surface, quieter driving ride, and improved skid resistance are among the many properties it uses to improve performance. This paper reports on a study investigating relationships between interlayer shear strength and aggregate gradation, amounts of sprayed emulsion bonding agent, and interlayer bonder properties of the UTFC-10 bituminous mixture using an interlayer shearing device in direct shear testing. Study results indicate that a desirable interlayer binder for UTFC treatment use is the styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) tri-block polymer-modified asphalt emulsion studied. Desirable SBS emulsion content should exceed 2.5% by weight, sprayed emulsion amount per square meter should be about 0.8 to 1.2L, and UTFC bituminous mixture air void percentage should be limited to 8 to 10%.
