WHO WILL RIDE THESE TRAINS?

ANALYSES OF PASSENGER TRAVEL PREFERENCES ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE METROLINER, THE HIGHSPEED TRAIN BEING DEVELOPED BETWEEN NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON. COSTS ARE COMPARED OF CAR TRAVEL PER PERSON WITH COMPETING MODES. TRAVEL TIMES ARE COMPARED FROM DOWNTOWN TO DOWNTOWN FOR AIRPORT TRAVEL AND RAILROAD TRAVEL. IT APPEARS THAT THE METROLINER CAN ACHIEVE A SAVING IN TRAVEL TIME. THE THREE- HOUR METROLINER SCHEDULE SHOULD INCREASE PASSENGER DEMAND BY A SMALL PERCENTAGE. COMPARED WITH THE EXPENSE OF AN ENTIRELY NEW TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM, THE COST OF UPGRADING THE PRESENT RAILROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY SO THAT FAST SCHEDULES CAN BE OBTAINED IS VERY CHEAP.
