MOVING THINGS

MOVEMENT OF THINGS OVER ANY DISTANCE IS TOO SLOWLY BECOMING AN INTEGRATED PROCESS. CONTAINERIZATION TO UNITIZE LOADS IS AFFECTING THE TECHNOLOGY OF HANDLING, CONVEYING, STORING AND RETRIEVING DISCRETE ITEMS. INTERFACES BETWEEN MODES OF TRANSPORT ARE BECOMING MECHANIZED AND AUTOMATED TO AVOID DELAYING COSTLY CONVEYANCES LIKE AIRCRAFT OR SHIPS. BUT PROCESSING OF SHIPPING DOCUMENTS STILL DELAYS PHYSICAL MOVEMENTS. INFORMATION SYSTEMS ARE BEGINNING TO HANDLE THE DOCUMENTATION IN PARALLEL WITH MOVEMENT AND OFTEN ARE USED TO CONTROL THE HANDLING OF MACHINERY. A SYSTEMS APPROACH IS APPEARING, FOCUSING ON NEW TRADEOFFS IN WEIGHT AND SIZES OF CONTAINERS AND WAYS TO LOAD THEM ON SHIPS, AIRCRAFT, AND RAIL CARS. /S&T/
