Application of Warm-Mix Modified Asphalt Mixture in Highway Maintenance Project

A relatively new technology that has been used worldwide in asphalt pavement construction is warm mix asphalt (WMA). Energy savings, environmental advantages, construction cost reduction, and construction season extension are among the many advantages offered by WMA. Satisfactory WMA pavement performance has been indicated by current and past research. Pavement communities worldwide have shown great interest in WMA due to continued application and the desire for performance improvement. To systematically study behavior and performance of styrene-butadiene-rubber (SBR) emulsion or epoxy resin modified WMA mixtures in this research, laboratory and field evaluations were conducted. Results showed the addition of SBR emulsion improved WMA mixture viscosity and temperature significantly, while epoxy resin resulted in a significant change in WMA penetration characteristic. In terms of WMA ductility, there was no observation of significant changes. SBR-modified WMA mixtures exhibited superior high temperature performance and water stability when compared to regular WMA mixtures and hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures with the same aggregate gradation. Overall, equal or better performance was shown by SBR-modified WMA mixtures when compared to conventional HMA mixtures.
