Environmental Impact of Airports: Contamination of Groundwater
Impacto Ambiental De Aeroportos: Contaminacao De Aguas Subterraneas
This paper describes how airport users have been growing and the amount of air travel has been increasing in recent decades. The airlines are increasing their fleets to cope with demand and to adapt to the new situation the airports are enlarging capacity and infrastructure. It is important for administrative and economic purposes to define environmental airport operation capacity and it is necessary that the interaction among the activities of the airport and for the passengers quality of life. The goal of this paper is to perform environmental impacts analysis in the soil and groundwater that is generated from airport activities and to evaluate the main pollution sources, pollutants and damages to the human health. The adopted methodology in this paper is the scientific investigation of environmental airport management, and environmental impacts linked to the airports and its relationship with the public health. This paper presents the main sources of soil and groundwater pollution, from the airport activities, and makes an analysis of pollute type and human diseases. Thus, some cases studies were selected to present the reality of United States and Canada airports. The paper also presents the consequences of the environmental impacts related to groundwater quality altered by airport activities. The groundwater contamination risk is a reality that is not being explored by the Brazilian airport management and therefore, becomes a necessary environmental investigation.
