The Kolibri Card: Customer Loyalty and Operational Planning

This article describes the electronic ticketing system implemented by KreisVerkehr Schwabisch Hall GmbH, a mixed-mode public transportation association in Germany. The electronic ticketing system was introduced to ease access to buses and trains in the Schwabisch Hall administrative district, which has a complex fare structure. Passengers use a card called the Kolibri card to pay for their travel. Passengers scan their cards as they enter the bus or train, and fares are automatically deducted depending on distance traveled when a passenger "checks out" of the network. Over 12,500 customers now use the Kolibri card. In addition to easing travel for passengers, the system also collects data that can be used for operational planning. The information collected on how customers are using the system can also be used for targeted marketing efforts.
