Intelligent Transport Systems: Embracing Change

This paper reflects on how South Africa has embraced a myriad of changes over the past 14 years (from political, social, economic and cultural to technology) and, despite the challenges associated with an emerging “new world” economy, has taken advantage of the opportunity to leapfrog old technologies and learn from other’s mistakes in applying Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) that are relevant to this country’s transportation environment. Topics discussed include the shortage of skills within the transportation, management, and operational sectors; community awareness; the role of transportation in the development of the previously disadvantaged; technology advances and acceptance; the benefits of coming to ITS as a relative late-comer; cost-effectiveness; the motorist’s perception of congestion; and ITS strategies to combat and reduce congestion.
