Intelligent Transport Systems In Cyprus: Unique Features and Challenges In Developing A Complete and Suitable ITS Framework for A Small Island EU Member State

The paper presents the methodology and results for the development of an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Master Plan and policy action proposals for the Republic of Cyprus. The obvious path to follow is to identify and analyze best practices adopted by more advanced countries within the EU, and/or the Americas or Japan in the area of ITS policies and national architectures. However, the Republic of Cyprus has some unique characteristics, which make this task challenging and complicated. Cyprus is an island country, thus with low to none international road traffic, and relatively small dimensions in terms of population and size. Nonetheless, Cyprus has on the other hand, typical transport related and ITS needs and the desire to harmonize with EU guidelines.
