US Railways Rise to PTC Challenge

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, Positive Train Control (PTC) signaling is to be implemented by the United States rail industry by 2015. It will encompass the nation's entire mixed-traffic network, which is vast. A typical PTC system incorporates a dynamic speed control unit information method for changing track or signal conditions, and a locomotive based speed display and control unit. As defined for Class 1 freight railways, a PTC provides the train driver with train location based information on movement authorities. Unsafe movement is then prevented when onboard equipment enforces these authorities. PTC tracks train movements through GPS navigation, and is meant to work in signaled or dark territory.
