Fighting the Case for Rail

Unlike other transportation modes, there is no united voice to fight for the UK railroad industry's interests. This article discusses how this lack of a skilled political and media lobbying body negatively impacts the rail industry. News media working on railroad stories have a difficult time finding spokespeople to represent the overall industry. This matters much more now that the UK is a year or less from a general election, with cuts in public spending guaranteed, whoever is in power. Both the Conservative and Labour parties are promising to protect spending on health, education and defense, which means trimming the Department for Transport's budget would seem to be inevitable. This would seem to be an ideal time for the disparate competing interests of rail companies to put aside their differences so that they can work together to protect railroad financing.
