An Overview of Mobility and Safety Issues Related to Highway Transportation in India

This paper examines highway-related mobility and safety issues in India and summarizes recommendations on how road safety and traffic management can be improved. In comparing the relative mobility indices of 9 countries, India appears to come in the middle in terms of providing mobility for people and goods. However, India's economic growth may soon increase traffic demand to a breaking point, unless strategic actions are adopted, especially in large metropolitan areas. In order to manage the growing traffic demand and keep the system safe, the authors recommend: the use of traffic demand management techniques, transportation infrastructure improvements, effective planning and decision making, utilization of smart growth principles, and the implementation of safety strategies. Directions for future research are discussed.
