In-Vehicle ITS Adaptation and Integration In Powered-Two-Wheelers: The SAFERIDER European Project

This paper describes the SAFERIDER European project as it applies to the enhancement of powered two-wheelers (PTW) riders’ safety. SAFERIDER is a 3-year research project, launched in January 2008, funded by the 7th Framework-Programme of the European Commission that aims to study the potential of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) integration on PTWs for the most crucial functionalities and to develop efficient and rider-friendly interfaces and interaction elements for riders comfort and safety. The SAFERIDER project incorporates intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology to the enhancement of road safety, but the authors contend that the application of these technologies to PTW is lacking behind that for typical passenger vehicles. They note that motorcycle and moped fatalities account for 17.8% of the total number of road accident fatalities in Europe. The authors describe how SAFERIDER aims to design, adapt and develop eight ADAS/IVIS subsystems and their elements and integrate them in different combinations on the project demonstration vehicles.
