Improving The Picture: The Maturing Context Of CCTV

Advances in technology used for closed-circuit television (CCTV) are enabling less expensive implementations, and reducing the dependency on supporting infrastructure in the field of transportation. At the same time, a growing awareness of the use of CCTV by transport authorities and a maturing understanding of the potential uses of this by third parties presents organizational challenges for all operators of CCTV in handling requests for information and meeting legislative obligations. This paper reviews these advances and their impact on a range of organizations that use CCTV across the transport industry. The authors outline the options to be considered in managing and resolving related issues and then present a maturity model by which organizations can assess their current state and understand their future direction in this area. Maturity, in this case, refers to the level at which an organization is managing its CCTV deployments and strategy. They conclude that by putting in place a mechanism with which to assess the current and ideal states (in terms of the deployment of CCTV) to achieve business benefits, the organization will be able to make more informed decisions about which projects to pursue in order to best achieve its wider business aims. By placing this analysis within the context of the wider technology suite, the organization is also able to understand the influence that other areas may have on its CCTV deployments.
