On Models and Solutions for the Allocation of Transportation Resources in Hub-And-Spoke Systems

This paper describes how the fleet-sizing-and-allocation problem is one of the main decision problems currently in actual logistics systems. However, because of its complexity, no analytical solutions can be expected. Therefore the authors suggest two things. First, to introduce some structure for the investigated system and second to simulate corresponding systems and use simulation optimization and this is the approach presented in the paper. Thereby, the authors restrict their research to hub-and-spoke systems. For a simple model with known deterministic demand for transportation service, the authors develop an optimization algorithm. For more real situations, the authors describe a software system, which allows for applying the simulation optimization approach and some examples show the applicability of this approach.
