Critical Issues in Aviation and the Environment 2009: Technology Deployment

Research into the fundamental effects of aviation on the environment cannot be converted into improvements that would reduce those effects unless the recommended technologies are actually developed and deployed in the field. The pace and scope of deploying new technologies within the aviation enterprise in an increasingly complex future depends on numerous factors, many of which are not well understood. These factors include the following: How to introduce new technologies within the existing aviation system interface constraints; How to make new technologies marketable; How to determine costs and benefits of new technologies; How to stimulate commercial risk-taking; How to meet future demands; and How to address future issues. Each of these factors is briefly examined in this report.
