The Role of Geometric Road Design Parameters in Driving Speed Negotiation and Safety Perception: Objective and Subjective Measures in Simulation Study

Evaluating perceptual properties of road curves is the critical point in rural road design and road safety. A research project dealing with spatial road design geometrical aspects that enhance road safety is presented in this study. Elaboration of road curve design rules which support safety in accordance with the Self Explaining Roads concept is the focus of this research. Testing the driver's behavior and speed effects of driving on rural roads with different roadside visible characteristics and geometric parameters (width and number of transition curves, curvatures, driving lanes, etc) was the study's main aim. The Italian Interuniversity Research Centre of Road Safety driving simulation laboratory was the site at which the laboratory experiment, pilot studies and main experimental works were conducted. The focus of this paper's analysis are the relationships between driver behavior and experimental variables related to driving speed and other advanced behavioral indicators connected to curve geometry, risk perception, speed choice, and driving trajectory. There is additional analysis of simulated road subjective safety and perceptual qualities, to disclose relationships between road safety subjective and objective measures. The combination of the simulation experiment and the questionnaire results showed the relationships of driver behavior and gender and driving experience. The effectiveness of clothoids as road path transition curves is demonstrated through the study results in terms of road safety of road visibility effects on driver behavior under different road scenarios and different geometrical conditions. The advanced techniques of road space visualization and simulation are shown by the general results to be better able to disclose the relationships between design road parameters and behavior aspects important in creating safer road infrastructure than qualitative measures.
