Technical Development for Shinkansen Speed Increases

This article describes technical developments directed at increasing the speed of Shinkansen high speed trains to a target operation speed of 360 km/h. The article first gives an overview of FASTECH360, which is a series of test train sets designed to serve as a prototype for rolling stock running at 360 km/h. It then describes issues and technical developments in the following areas: 1) higher running speeds; 2) securing safety and reliability; 3) environmental compatibility and noise control; 4) and improvement of ride comfort. The article concludes with a look at future technical developments.
