USE OF MULTIVARIATE STATISTICS IN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

THE VARIABLES COLLECTED IN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING STUDIES ARE OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC NATURE AND THEREFORE ARE INTERRELATED AND RANDOM. THESE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VARIABLES ARE VERY OFTEN NOT CONSIDERED WHEN APPLYING MULTIPLE LINEAR REGRESSION TO SUCH DATA, AND THE RESULT IS A MODEL WHICH HAS NO FUNCTIONAL INTERPRETATION. A MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL APPROACH TO THIS PROBLEM IS PRESENTED. TWO TECHNIQUES WILL BE USED TO GENERATE A CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VARIABLES: FACTOR ANALYSIS AND COMPONENT ANALYSIS ACCOMPANIED BY MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL TESTS. /AUTHOR/
