Florida's Intelligent Transportation Systems Wide-Area Network

This paper describes the development and deployment of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) wide area network (WAN) used for center to center communications between Florida’s Regional traffic management centers (TMCs). The ITS WAN will enable: car-to-car (C2C) communication between the software-based traffic management systems installed at each RTMC; statewide sharing of traffic-camera video images; and transport of related ITS traffic-management communications and data. The author first presents the issues and needs that are addressed by the ITS WAN, then reviews the operational uses of the network and the benefits that can be achieved and expected. The author also discusses how the network is designed and implemented, outlining the timetable for its full deployment. The paper briefly reviews some technical issues associated with the network and explores options for higher bandwidth connections to some locations and for network redundancy. Two alternatives are being explored for higher speed connectivity between regional TMCs, one with Florida’s MyFloridaNet service and one with Florida LambdaRail. MyFloridaNet is a State telecommunications service provided by a private consortium of telecom carriers. The Florida LambdaRail (FLR) was created to facilitate advanced research, education, and economic development activities in the State of Florida, utilizing next generation network technologies, protocols, and services.
