Feasibility Study On Vehicle-Infra Cooperative Information System For Prevention Of Right Turn
This paper describes a system that can be used as a component of Driving Safety Support Systems (DSSS), part of the new emphasis on the part of the Japanese government to create the world’s safest road traffic society. This system uses information from roadside sensors including visible optical sensors and a millimeter-wave sensor. The authors report on verification tests used to validate the DSSS, and evaluate the developing technologies. They focus on the Right-Turn Accident Prevention Information Provision System. Right turn accidents occur at intersections between right-turn vehicles and oncoming straight vehicles in opposite lanes (vehicles drive on the left in Japan). Right-turn accidents are the third most common type of traffic accidents (after rear-end collisions and head-on collisions). The roadside processing unit enables drivers to get information about oncoming traffic, even if there is a blind spot caused by a vehicle making a right turn in the opposite lane. The system was validated in a real world setting by 48 participants; the authors conclude that the system is effective in preventing right-turn accidents. More than 90% of the test subjects also reported that they found the system helpful.
