Extended Reality - A New Simulation Method for the Rapid Development of Car2x Communication

This paper describes a new method that can be used by engineers for the rapid development of car-to-car (Car2X) communication used for cooperative safety and comfort systems in vehicles. This method uses one component of the graphic user interface (GUI) viilab toolkit, an Extended Reality simulation. This “in-the-loop” simulation is able to create virtual scenarios which enrich the real car or On Board Unit with virtual components including other cars, pedestrians, Road Side Units and traffic signals. The use of this system supports the development and debugging of the applications and algorithms in a short time period and with low risk to drivers. In particular, a smooth transfer without a disruption in the development process is possible from complete virtual simulation on one computer to a complete real testing on many distributed units.
