Experimental Traffic Flow Impact Analysis of Tinted Vehicles Using RTK GPS

This paper investigates problems that can be caused by tinted windows in automobiles. The authors developed an innovative experiment method to verify the impact of tinted windows; their method used RTK GPS receivers, which enable the collection of data on the time, speed, and location of a moving vehicle. They investigated the reduction in vision for the driver of the vehicle with tinted windows as well as the obstruction of view for drivers in vehicles following a car with tinted windows. The obstructed view can prevent drivers from easily assessing the full traffic situation. Using the collected data, the effects of the forward vehicle with tinted windows on the traffic condition such as headways and acceleration noise were analyzed. The authors conclude with a brief discussion of the limitations of this pilot study and outline recommendations for further research into the safety impact of darkly-tinted windows in automobiles.
