The Application of Emulsion Warm Mix Asphalt in Long Tunnel Pavement

Long tunnel asphalt pavement construction, particularly due to the lack of ventilation, still handicaps the construction process in China and even in the world. Based on the actual Emulsion Warm Mix Asphalt (EWMA) long tunnel pavement project, EWMA's characteristics have been studied compared with conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Furthermore, EWMA compactibility performance at various compaction temperatures has been evaluated by SGC test. The field pavement performance has been evaluated according to related specifications. The reductions in fuel consumption and gas emission of EWMA have been quantified in contrast to conventional HMA. The study shows that EWMA can reduce 30°C~40°C compaction temperature and have significant lower energy consumption and emission in tunnel construction, and increase about 10 percent rutting resistance compared with conventional HMA. Therefore, EWMA is remarkable material for long tunnel asphalt pavement construction.
