The hills are alive

A brief account is given of a project being undertaken in Fujairah, the fifth largest state of the United Arab Emirates, which will construct a 45 km, 10-lane motorway that will link Fujairah with Dubai. Being a totally mountainous area, creating the route involves major cutting and filling operations resulting in the excavation of over 14 million cubic metres of material. In order to avoid constructing bridges or tunnels, massive earth retaining structures are being used. Tensar has designed soil reinforced walls, some of which reach 60 metres high in three 20 metre tiers. The route is set on gabbro. Material cut from the mountain face is crushed, compacted and reinforced with uniaxial geogrids which are then fastened to concrete blocks and laid dry. A total of 100,000 square metres of wall facing will be constructed in this way. Also included are large culverts which are designed to cope with the periodic flooding anticipated in this area.
