Grout to the Rescue

This article describes how a remedial grouting program was successful in stopping the unexpected settlement of a bridge caisson. The article relates that during construction of a new lift span on a railroad bridge crossing the Thames River in Connecticut, settlement was detected on one of the piers. A deep grout injection program was initiated, and the success of the program was due in large part to a computerized data acquisition system that made it possible to instantaneously monitor and evaluate the grouting. The article describes in detail the grouting plan as well as the grouting materials that were used.
