Hot Trains, Cold Calculations: Incremental HSR

This article describes how maintenance costs for track for dedicated (“true”) high speed or incremental (“higher speed”) trains can be estimated. A chart shows the cost per mile of a steady-state maintenance program for a regional passenger rail infrastructure on a typical day in 2007. The amount totals $60,000. Also included are tables showing estimated costs on track that is shared by passenger and freight. The tables look at five different scenarios based on annual tonnage, traffic mix, curvature, and FRA class.
