ROAD CLASSIFICATION, RURAL AND URBAN - 1964

THIS DOCUMENT PRESENTS A REVISED STANDARD ROAD CLASSIFICATION WHICH MAY BE USED AS A COMMON BASIS FOR RECORDING HIGHWAY STATISTICS, ACCIDENT REPORTING, ECONOMIC STUDIES, FISCAL PROGRAMMING, LEGISLATION AND GENERAL ADMINISTRATION OF HIGHWAYS IN CANADA. THE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CONSISTS OF EIGHT ROAD TYPES' FREEWAY, ARTERIAL, COLLECTOR AND LOCAL FOR BOTH RURAL AND URBAN AREAS. THE PURPOSES OF ROAD CLASSIFICATION ARE ENUMERATED AND EIGHT FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN CLASSIFICATION ARE DEFINED. A PROCEDURE FOR ASSIGNING ROADS TO EACH CLASS BY MEANS OF A TABLE OF CHARACTERISTICS IS GIVEN. THE NEW CLASSIFICATION IS RELATED TO THE STANDARD 1956 CGRA CLASSIFICATION. THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE CLASSIFICATION TO THAT EMPLOYED IN THE MANUAL OF GEOMETRIC DESIGN STANDARDS FOR CANADIAN ROADS AND STREETS /CGRA, 1964/ IS SHOWN. TYPICAL FORMS FOR REPORTING ROAD MILEAGES AND EXPENDITURES ON THE BASIS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION ARE GIVEN. /CGRA/
