SOME RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HIGHWAY PRICE INDEXES AND THE VALUE OF ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION

THE VOLATILE NATURE OF BID PRICES FOR HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION IN CANADA HAS PROMPTED A SEARCH FOR A RELATED VARIABLE' A PARTICULARLY DEFINED VALUE OF ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION WAS CHOSEN. THIS EXPLORATORY STUDY, WHICH MAY BE OF USE TO ECONOMISTS AND ENGINEERS WISHING TO EXPLORE THE SUBJECT IN DEPTH, OUTLINES THE REASONING BEHIND THE STUDY, METHODS USED , OBSERVATIONS AND TENTATIVE WORKING HYPOTHESES FORMED. TENTATIVE WORKING HYPOTHESES' BID PRICE INDEXES AND PROVINCIAL OR REGIONAL VOLUMES OF NON-HIGHWAY ENGINEERING VARY DIRECTLY, THE VOLUME OF HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION CAN BE RAISED WITHOUT A CONCURRENT RISE BEING OBSERVED IN THE PRICE INDEX. THE FURTHER TESTING OF THESE HYPOTHESES WOULD BE OF INTEREST TO HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS SEEKING TO PREDICT PRICE LEVELS AND TO THE ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY SEEKING TO INCREASE ITS KNOWLEDGE OF THE FACTORS AFFECTING PRICE MOVEMENT. /CGRA/
