The Economic Value of Investment in Freight Transportation: Missouri Rail

Missouri is home to 19 railroads operating on nearly 4,400 miles of track, 2,500 miles of yard track, and about 7000 public and private crossings. The rail industry currently employs 9,139 workers; 8,100 in rail transportation positions and 1,039 in rail support activities. The rail industry exceeds statewide average annual wages with rail transportation positions earning $73,700 annually and rail support positions earning more than $46,100. The rail industry employment has a large impact on Missouri’s economy generating an estimated $78 million annually in new net Missouri general revenues, $1.1 billion in personal income, nearly $2.5 billion in Gross State Product, and $4.2 billion in total economic output. The more than 9,100 direct workers generate an estimated 13,341 indirect and induced spin-off jobs annually in Missouri through purchases of industry intermediate inputs and employee consumer spending. More than 400.4 million tons of freight is moved across Missouri rail annually representing more than 8.1 million carloads.3 Missouri exports approximately 29.4 million tons of commodities by rail valued at more than $19.8 billion.
