Sensor Detection: Guidance on Technology Deployment

This article presents a detailed technical analysis of traffic sensors. It covers in-roadway and over-roadway sensors, focusing on their applications, installation, operation, evaluation, and maintenance. In-roadway sensors, which are embedded in the pavement or attached to the pavement surface, include devices such as loop detectors or magnetic sensors. Over-roadway sensors, which are mounted above the roadway or alongside it, include devices such as video image processors, microwave radar, laser radar, ultrasonic, acoustic, or passive infrared sensors. The article concludes with a brief looks at what traffic sensors might be like in the future.
