Conquering the Deserts

This article gives an overview of the construction taking place on the North-South Railway (NSR) in Saudia Arabia. Originally intended to serves as a mineral line for bauxite and phosphate deposits, the line has transformed into a full mixed traffic railroad which will also handle passenger and general freight traffic. Scheduled for opening by the end of 2010, the NSR is one of three major rail project for Iran. The other two include the Makkah-Madinah Haramain Railway and the Saudi Landbridge.
