HIGHWAY CRASH BARRIERS

THIS REPORT ANALYZES THE ROLE OF LATERAL VEHICLE DECELERATION, VEHICLE SPIN OUT AND IMPACT ANGLE IN VEHICLE-BARRIER IMPACTS. DESIGN CRITERIA AND STRENGTH REQUIREMENTS FOR STEEL SAFETY FENCES ARE PROPOSED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF RIGID CONCRETE SAFETY FENCES, FLEXIBLE WIRE ROPE SAFETY FENCES, STEEL BEAM SAFETY FENCES, HYDRAULIC SAFETY FENCES, CONCRETE SAFETY CURBS, HEDGES, AND AGGREGATE DECELERATION BEDS USED IN JAPAN, THE USA, GREAT BRITAIN, SWITZERLAND, SWEDEN, THE NETHERLANDS, FRANCE, AND GERMANY. CRITERIA USED IN THOSE COUNTRIES FOR ERECTING SAFETY FENCES ON THE SIDES OF THE ROAD OR ON CENTRAL RESERVES ARE LISTED. MENTION IS MADE OF THE RESEARCH CARRIED OUT BY THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY ON ACCIDENT COSTS AND COST-EFFECTIVENSS OF BARRIER INSTALLATIONS. /TRRL/
