Maritime Domain Awareness

This article is about the United States Coast Guard's efforts to promote international involvement in maritime safety and security. As described in the article, Maritime domain awareness (MDA) "is the effective understanding of activities, events, and threats in the maritime environment that could impact global safety, security, economic activity, or the environment." To achieve this awareness, the Coast Guard uses "multicultural structures," comprised of "formal multilateralism" (with structure provided via the United Nation’s International Maritime Organization) and informal multilateral forums, which are designed to both build relationships and to share information. As the need for intelligence and information increases, the author notes that the Coast Guard is likely to accelerate its pursuit of international partnerships and relationship building.
