CYCLIC DEFORMATION AS A CRACK TIP AND ITS CORRELATION WITH FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION

ELASTIC STRESSES AT THE CRACK TIP AND AT SOME DISTANCE FROM IT, ARE DISCUSSED AND AN EQUATION USED TO APPROXIMATE ELASTIC STRESSES IS PRESENTED. THE APPLICATION OF THE SCALING LAW IS REVIEWED. MEASUREMENT OF FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH AND CYCLIC SURFACE STRAINS NEAR CRACK TIPS IN 2024-T351 ALUMINUM ALLOY IS OUTLINED. SURFACE STRAINS WERE MEASURED BY THE MOIRE METHOD WITH A HIGH DENSITY GRILLE 13,400 LINES PER INCH. CONCLUSIONS REACHED (ON THE BASIS OF THE STUDY) ON CRACK TIP NECKING AND CYCLIC DEFORMATION ARE DISCUSSED.
