Development of Universal Driver Model for Predictive Evaluation of Drive Assist Systems

This paper describes the development of a Universal Driver Model which simulates human general driving behavior including cognition, judgment and operation processing. The authors developed this model in order to predict the effect of the Advanced Driver Assist System on reductions in traffic accidents. The work is being conducted in support of Japan's renewed emphasis on road safety. They introduce the design methodology, the basic specification and architecture of the UDM, and representative simulation results. The authors contend that the traffic simulators that incorporate a UDM achieve better results in the virtual traffic environment. A brief conclusion discusses the inclusion of graphical user interfaces (GUI) in these simulators.
