Road traffic crashes in Iran from 1997 to 2007

Iran has had the highest fatal road traffic injury (RTI) rate in the world. Evaluating Iran's fatal RTIs over the past 11 years (1997-2007) through retrospective analysis is the study objective. Out of a total of 232,841 RTI deaths from 1997 to 2007 (with a male/female victim ratio of 4.2/1), there was an increase in both fatal and non-fatal RTIs. There was, however, a 0.65% fatal RTI decline in 2006 and a 16.9% decline in 2007. Decline was significant for both genders. The decrease in RTI is difficult to attribute to specific factors, although one of the following may be involved: increased congestion in cities, helmet and seatbelt use, avoidance of high-risk driving behaviors, and improved safety of modern vehicles.
