Deicing in a Green World

The article provides an overview of the use of engineered wetlands to treat chemical runoff resulting from deicing responsibly and effectively. Engineered wetlands combine a controllable, active system that uses specially designed processes with a natural wetland's passive treatment to drive a chemical reaction within a wetland environment. Airports with abundant land are ideally suited for engineered wetlands. Projects at Edmonton International Airport in Alberta, Canada, and Buffalo Niagara International Airport in New York are profiled.
