Tabu Search and Benders Decomposition Approaches for a Capacitated Closed-Loop Supply Chain Network Design Problem

A multiproduct closed-loop supply chain network design problem is considered by the authors that consists of finite-capacity manufacturing, distribution, and collection facilities and remanufacturing facilities that serve a set of retailers. A mixed-integer linear program is first presented to determine optimal collection center and remanufacturing facility locations along with integrated forward and reverse flows such as total facility location, processing, and minimization of transportation costs associated with network forward and reverse flows. Second, two tabu search heuristics are devised by the authors - sequential and random neighborhood search procedures - in which search functions are effectively combined using move and exchange neighborhoods to improve solution space exploration efficiency. A transshipment heuristic is also suggested to effectively and quickly estimate a feasible solution's objective function value (goodness) in the course of a tabu search. Third, a Benders decomposition solution approach is presented by the authors that incorporates tabu search heuristics as well as Benders cuts strengthened for facilitation of faster convergence and improved computational efficiency, especially for large-scale instances. While the Benders decomposition approach is made possible through solutions using tabu search heuristics through provision of initial upper bounds and facilitation of good initial Benders cuts generation, the high quality of the tabu search heuristic solution computational verification through the lower bounds obtained by the Benders approach. Computational results are presented by the authors illustrating efficient solution algorithm performance in terms of both solution time and quality, especially for larger size problems.
