REPORT OF THE SIXTEENTH ROUND TABLE ON TRANSPORT ECONOMICS HELD IN PARTS ON THE FOLLOWING TOPIC: STUDIES (NOTABLY FROM THE ECONOMETRIC APPROACH) OF FACTORS DETERMINING THE DEMAND FOR FREIGHT TRANSPORT

IN THIS STUDY DEMAND FOR FREIGHT TRANSPORT IS CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO MACRO-ECONOMIC CONCEPTS ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE SCARCITY OF STATISTICAL QUANTITATIVE AND VALUE DATA AVAILABLE ON FREIGHT TRANSPORT DEMAND. THE FACTORS DETERMINING TRANSPORT DEMAND ARE CLASSIFIED INTO DEMAND-RELATED AND SUPPLY-RELATED DETERMINANTS. THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH CARRIED OUT BY THE IFO INSTITUTE FOR ECONOMIC RESEARCH, MUNICH ARE USED TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS ON TRANSPORT DEMAND OF CHANGES IN RELATIONS WITHIN THE ECONOMIC STRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT IN ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND GROWTH OF GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT. STATISTICS ARE UTILIZED TO SET UP A COMMODITY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS, AND SHIFTS IN DEMAND WITHIN FREIGHT TRANSPORT ARE DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH THE RELATIONS BETWEEN SECTIONAL TRANSPORT DEMAND AND A NUMBER OF ECONOMIC VARIABLES. METHODS OF CARRYING OUT REGIONAL ANALYSIS OF TRANSPORT DEMAND ARE INDICATED AND THE INFLUENCE OF DEMAND AND SUPPLY DETERMINANTS OF FREIGHT TRANSPORT, IN PARTICULAR COST IS EXAMINED. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO EXPLAIN MODAL SPLIT IN FREIGHT TRANSPORT.
