INCREASES IN GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHTS

INCREASED GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHTS WITHIN THE OVERALL MAXIMUM OF 32 TONS PERMITTED BY THE MOTOR VEHICLE (CONSTRUCTION AND USE) REGULATIONS 1969, TAKE EFFECT FROM JUNE 27TH, 1972. A NUMBER OF CRITERIA HAVE TO BE SATISFIED BEFORE ADVANTAGE CAN BE TAKEN OF THE NEW WEIGHT; THIS PAMPHLET OUTLINES THOSE REQUIREMENTS REGARDING STATED AXLE SPACINGS AND PLATED AXLE LIMITS, AND GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT FOR RIGID AND ARTICULATED VEHICLES. MENTION IS MADE OF THE APPLICATION OF THE NEW LIMITS TO EXISTING VEHICLES, OF THE VARIOUS GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT LIMITS FOR ONE VEHICLE, OF THE WEIGHT LIMIT ON STEERABLE WHEELS, OF GROSS WEIGHT LIMITS FOR THREE - AND FOUR- AXLED RIGID VEHICLES FIRST USED ON AND AFTER JUNE 1, 1973, WHICH DO NOT MEET THE CRITERIA FOR THE NEW GROSS WEIGHTS, AND OF THE NEED FOR OPERATORS TO ADVISE THEIR MOTOR INSURERS AND 'GOODS IN TRANSIT' INSURERS. /TRRL/
