US TRANSPORTATION - SOME ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

BASIC DATA RELATING TO ENERGY RESOURCES AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF TRANSPORTATION ARE PRESENTED. A GRAPH IS PRESENTED WHICH ILLUSTRATES THE IMPACT OF TRANSPORTATION AS A PETROLEUM CONSUMER AND COMPARES CUMULATIVE PETROLEUM CONSUMPTION OF THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR ALONE, BEGINNING 1970, WITH PROVED AND ESTIMATED RESERVES OF FOSSIL FUELS. THE COMULATIVE AUTOMOTIVE CONSUMPTION OF THESE RESERVES IS PROJECTED ON THE BASIS OF VEHICLE POPULATION GROWTH RATES FOR THE PAST DECADE. A MODAL BREAKDOWN OF TRANSPORTATION ENERGY CONDUMTPION IS ILLUSTRATED BY A FIGURE. THIS DISTRIBUTION IS THEN PROJECTED THROUGH 2000, ASSUMING CONTINUATION OF CURRENT TRENDS. THE AIR POLLUTION PICTURE IS PRESENTED IN AN EXCHIBIT WHICH SHOWS THE CONTRIBUTION, BY MAJOR SOURCES, TO THE TOTAL FOR THE MAJOR SPECIES. TECHNOLOGICAL AND CONTROL MEASURES FOR THE SOLUTION OF EACH PROBLEM ARE DISCUSSED. TECHNOLOGICAL MEASURES FOCUS ON THE AUTOMOBILE, HIGH SPEED GROUND TRANSPORTATION AND NON-PETROLEUM FUELS. HYBRID ENERGY STORING SYSTEMS, ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND FUEL-CELL-DRIVEN ELECTREIES MAY OFFER MEANS OF IMPROVING AUTOMOTIVE DRIVING EFFICIENCY. CONTROL MEASURES WHICH WOULD ENCOURAGE SHIFT IN TRANSPORTATION DEMAND FROM THE AUTOMOBILE TO THE MORE EFFICIENT MODES ARE SEEN AS OFFERING A MORE SIGNIFICANT SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. INTERCITY TRANSPORTATION AND THE RELATIVELY INEFFICIENT AIR MODE TRAFFIC ARE REVIEWED. THE IMPACT OF THE AMENDED CLEAN AIR ACT OF 1970 IS DISCUSSED WITH RESPECT TO THE NEAR FUTURE. THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW EMISSION ENGINES THE CONVERSION TO NATURAL GAS AND THE RANKINE CYCLE ENGINE ARE DISCUSSED.
