SECTION 4. COMMERCIAL VEHICLE POWER PLANTS. PAPER 4/49: FUEL CELL-BATTERY HYBRID VEHICLES

A FUEL-CELL/LEAD-ACID BATTERY HYBRID VEHICLE HAS BEEN BUILT TO PROVIDE PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE OF THE ENGINEERING PROBLEMS WHICH WOULD BE MET WITH SUCH A POWER SOURCE. IN A HYBRID POWER SOURCE OF THIS TYPE THE MEAN POWER REQUIREMENT OF THE VEHICLE IS PROVIDED BY FUEL CELLS. DURING ACCELERATION AND HILL CLIMBING WHEN LARGER AMOUNTS OF POWER ARE REQUIRED, THE OUTPUT OF THE FUEL CELL IS SUPPLEMENTED BY A SECONDARY BATTERY. THIS BATTERY IS RE-CHARGED WHEN THE VEHICLE IS CRUISING OR AT REST. THE PAPER WILL DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OBTAINED IN DESIGNING AND OPERATING AN ACTUAL VEHICLE. HYDRAZINE-AIR BATTERIES WERE CHOSEN TO POWER THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A LIQUID-FUELLED VEHICLE WITH A REASONABLE POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIO. WHILE IT IS RECOGNIZED THAT HYDRAZINE HYDRATE IS NOT A PRACTICAL FUEL, THE ENGINEERING PROBLEMS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE WITH OTHER LIQUID-FUELLED FUEL CELLS. A DESCRIPTION WILL BE PROVIDED OF THE CONTROL SYSTEMS WHICH ARE NECESSARY TO MAKE DRIVING OF THE VEHICLE AS SIMPLE AS THAT OF A NORMAL CAR. (A). SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACT NO. 206226.
