DEVELOPMENTS TOWARDS FASTER INTERCITY PASSENGER RAIL TRANSPORTATION

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES SOME OF THE PRINCIPAL FACTORS FOR SHORTENING INTERCITY TRAVEL TIME BY RAIL, AND SOME OF THE RECENT INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS IN THIS DIRECTION. THE DRAMATIC PLANS OF THE RAILWAYS FOR FASTER INTERCITY TRANSPORTATION INDICATES THAT IN THE 70'S A NUMBER OF SECOND GENERATION HIGH-SPEED TRAINS WILL BE CRUISING AT OVER 150 MPH (240 KM/H) IN EUROPE AND ASIA.
