COMPARISION OF URBAN TRAVEL ECONOMIC COSTS

THE REPORT COMPARES ECONOMIC COSTS OF PERSONAL TRAVEL TO AND FROM WORK THAT WOULD PREVAIL IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICTS OF URBAN AREAS OF OVER ONE MILLION POPULATION. THE RELATIVE ECONOMICS OF VARIOUS TRANSPORTATION MODES ARE REVIEWED. THE DIRECT ECONOMIC TRANSPORTATION COSTS OF COMPUTER TRIPS BY RAIL TRANSIT, BUS TRANSIT AND PRIVATE AUTOMOBILE ARE ESTIMATED SINGLY AND IN COMBINATION. THE RESULTS ARE IN TERMS OF DOLLAR'S PER ONE-WAY PERSON TRIPS OF 5, 10, 15 AND 20 MILES. A DETAILED DISCUSSION OF THE 10-MILE TRIP IS PRESENTED IN ORDER TO ILLUSTRATE THE APPROACH USED. THE TECHNIQUES USED IN THIS REPORT CAN BE APPLIED IN DIFFERENT COMMUNTIES TO EVALUATE THE ECONOMIC COST OF PROPOSED TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES, THIS PROVIDING A BASIC ECONOMIC FOUNDATION FOR RECOMMENDATIONS.
