CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUCK TRAVEL IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION

TRENDS IN TRUCK TRAVEL, TRIP PURPOSE, TRIP GENERATION AND LAND USE WERE STUDIED. THE ADDITIONAL DEMAND PLACED ON THE REGIONAL HIGHWAY NETWORK BY THE MOVEMENT OF TRUCKS, AND THE PROBLEM OF LOADING AND UNLOADING AT TERMINALS AND DESTINATION POINTS, ARE RECOGNIZED AS THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THE ISSUE OF TRUCK TRAVEL. THE INVESTIGATIONS REVEALED THAT TRUCK TRIPS HAVE GROWN AT A SLIGHTLY HIGHER RATE THAN POPULATION BUT AT A SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER RATE THAN THAT OF AUTOMOBILE TRIPS. THE PREDOMINANT PURPOSE OF INTERNAL TRUCK TRAVEL IS TO DELIVER GOODS. THE DESTINATION LAND USE OF TRUCK TRAVEL PATTERNS IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF PERSONS TRAVEL, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HEAVY TRUCKS. WHEN SPECIFIC INDUSTRY TYPES ARE CONSIDERED, TRUCK TRIP GENERATION BY LOCATION IS FARILY STABLE. THE RELATIVE STABILITY OF TRUCK TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE FAIRLY ACCURATE FORECASTS OF REGIONAL TRUCK TRAVEL. FUTURE WORK WILL INVOLVE THE ANALYSIS OF TRUCK SHIPMENTS. THE ANALYSIS OF TRUCK SHIPMENTS WHICH WILL ALLOW BETTER PLANNING OF TERMINALS AS WELL AS ON-STREET AND OFF-STREET TRUCK LOADING ZONES IS PLANNED.
