TRIPLE TRAILER STUDY IN CALIFORNIA

TRIPLE TRAILERS AND/OR DOUBLE 40-FOOT TRAILERS UP TO 110 FEET ARE OPERATED BY PERMIT ON DESIGNATED ROUTES IN SIX WESTERN STATES. THEY ARE ALSO OPERATED ON SOME TOLL ROADS IN SIX MIDWESTERN AND EASTERN STATES. OPERATION IN WASHINGTON WAS DISCONTINUED BECAUSE OF OPPOSITION FROM THE PRESS AND HIGHWAY USERS, WHILE DISCONTINUANCE IN NEW YORK WAS BASED ON FAILURE TO DEMONSTRATE ECONOMIC BENEFITS. IN 1971 THE CALIFORNIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES REQUESTED THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS TO UNDERTAKE A REVIEW OF THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF SUCH TRAILERS. THE DEPARTMENT UNDERTOOK A DEMONSTRATION, PAID FOR BY THE STATE TRUCKING INDUSTRY, OVER APPROXIMATELY 1800 MILES ON VARIOUS TYPES OF ROADS. OBSERVATIONS ARE REPORTED WITH RESPECT TO STOPPING, BACKING, ACCELERATION, OFF-TRACKING, ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, OPERATION ON GRADES, OPERATION ON LOCAL ROADS, METROPOLITAN AREA FREEWAYS, AND MULTILANE RURAL HIGHWAYS, AND OPERATION AT NIGHT. NO CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN, BUT THE FINDINGS ARE GENERALLY FAVORABLE.
