ABANDONED RAILROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY PILOT STUDY

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES ARE TO DETERMINE CURRENT LAND USE AND THE FEASIBILITY OF USING ABANDONED RAILROAD RIGHTS-OF- WAY FOR FUTURE TRANSPORTATION NEEDS. A BRIEF HISTORY OF EACH ABANDONED RIGHT-OF-WAY WITHIN A 25 MILE RADIUS OF HARRISBURG IS PROVIDED ALONG WITH MAPS AND PHOTOGRAPHS. THE CONCLUSIONS SUGGEST (1) THAT ONLY 3 ABANDONED RAILROAD RIGHTS-OF-WAY HAVE ANY VALUE FOR FUTURE TRANSPORTATION NEEDS, AND (2) THE RIGHT-OF-WAY LAND IS NOT RETAINED BY THE RAILROADS VERY LONG AFTER THE RAILS ARE REMOVED.
